6.1.2 Electrically insulated lightning protection system

An electrically insulated lightning protection system is a type of external lightning protection system in which the air-termination systems and down conductors are arranged in such a way that they remain electrically isolated from the object to be protected, but are mechanically fixed to it. On its way to the earthing system, the lightning current does not come into contact with any electrically conductive parts of the building structure. The use of electrically insulating materials (e.g. insulators made of glass-fibre-reinforced plastic, special high-voltage insulated cables, i.e. HVI Conductors) ensures that there are no dangerous flashovers or sparking between the lightning protection system and the metal or electrical installations of the system to be protected. This ensures that the required separation distances between lightning-current-carrying parts of the lightning protection system and all conductive components or installations in the building are maintained.
