3.3.9 Calculation assistances

The third edition of the IEC 62305-2 standard contains methods and data for calculating the risk of damage and the frequency of damage caused by lightning strikes in and near structures or in and near incoming supply lines, and for selecting lightning protection measures. 

The procedures and data listed in the standard are often complex and difficult to implement in practice. This, however, should and must not stop lightning protection specialists, in particular planning engineers, from dealing with this matter in depth. The quantitative assessment of the risk of lightning damage to a structure is a significant improvement on the situation that was common in the past, where decisions for or against lightning protection measures were often made solely on the bas
