3.3.5 Loss

If specific damage has occurred to a structure, the impact of this damage must be assessed. This is what the loss 'L' is for (this continues to be an unfortunate choice of terminology in IEC 62305-2; 'damage factor' or 'loss value' would probably be more apt here).

In contrast to the second edition of the standard, the third edition only calculates one risk value. However, a further division is made according to the causes of damage D1 to D3 into:

LT        Losses due to injuries caused by electric shock as a result of touch and step voltages (D1T).

LD        Losses due to injuries caused by electric shock as a result of direct lightning strikes (D1D).

LF        Losses due to physical damage (D2).

LO        Losses due to the failure of electrical and electronic systems (D3).

The loss must be determined for each relevant risk component for the structure. Furthermore, the structure may be divided into several zones, meaning that the losses may have to be allocated to the individual zones.
