3.3.6 Relevant risk components for different lightning strikes

There is a close connection between the cause of damage, the type of damage and the resulting relevant risk components. Depending on the sources of damage S1 to S4 (or the point of impact of the lightning discharge), the following risk components arise (see Table 3.3.6.1):

In case of a direct lightning strike to a structure (S1):
RAD        Risk of loss type L1 (loss of human life) due to electric shock to people caused by a direct lightning strike.
RAT        Risk of loss type L1 due to electric shock to people due to touch and step voltages within the structure and outside in zones up to 3 m around the down conductors.
RB        Risk of loss type L1 (RB1) and loss type L2 (loss due to physical damage: RB2) caused by dangerous sparking inside the structure, which triggers a fire or explosion or leads to mechanical or chemical effects that may also endanger the environment.
RC        Risk of loss type L1 (RC1) and loss type L2 (RC2) due to the failure of internal electrical and electronic systems caused by LEMP.

In case of a lightning strike to the ground near a structure (S2):
RM        Risk of loss type L1 (RM1) and loss type L2 (RM2) due to the failure of internal electrical and electronic systems as a result of LEMP.

In case of a direct lightning strike to an incoming line (S3):
RU        Risk of loss type L1 due to electric shock to people caused by step voltages within the structure.
RV        Risk of loss type L1 (RV1) and loss type L2 (RV2) due to dangerous sparking inside the structure caused by partial lightning currents on the incoming supply lines, which triggers a fire or explosion or leads to mechanical or chemical effects.
RW        Risk of loss type L1 (RW1) and loss type L2 (RW2) due to the failure of internal electrical and electronic systems as a result of induced overvoltages on the incoming supply lines.
