5.2.6 Calculating the protected volume
The determination of protected volumes is a central component of the planning and validation of lightning protection systems. It is used to assess whether all relevant parts of the building and technical installations are within an effective protected volume, which is defined in accordance with the selected lightning protection class. The calculation is performed using normative methods, in particular the rolling sphere method and the mesh method, as described in IEC 62305-3.
