5.2.7.2 Calculation factoring in the protected volume

A unique feature of the DEHNplan design software is its ability to link the calculation of the protected volume using the rolling sphere method directly with the calculation of the separation distance using the nodal analysis in a continuous, integrated process. This combination enables a particularly precise and practical assessment of lightning protection measures.

Integration of protected volume and separation distance
The protected volume analysis identifies precisely those areas of a building that could potentially be affected by a direct lightning strike. Only these exposed points are included in the calculation of the separation distance. All other elements of the lightning protection system – such as cable routes, connection points or nodes within the protected volume – are treated merely as current distribution points. This results in realistic modelling of current flows and a significant reduction in the required separation distances.
